How to size a power station for your needs
The key figure is watt-hours (Wh): how much energy you need, not just how much power you draw at one instant. Follow these four steps.
List what you need to power
Write down every appliance you want to keep running during an outage or off-grid. Note whether it runs continuously or only occasionally.
Add up the daily watt-hours
Multiply each appliance's wattage by how many hours per day it runs. A 50 W router running 24 hours = 1,200 Wh. A 150 W TV for 5 hours = 750 Wh. Sum them all.
Add 20 percent headroom
Inverters and charging losses eat roughly 15-20 percent of rated capacity. Size up, not down. A 1,000 Wh daily need calls for at least a 1,200 Wh power station.
Decide on solar charging
If grid power will be unavailable for more than one day, or you want to reduce electricity spend, adding solar panels makes sense. A 400 W panel in Nairobi delivers roughly 1,600-2,000 Wh on a sunny day. One panel is often enough to keep a RIVER 2 or DELTA 2 topped up daily.

When to add solar panels
Grid outages over 8 hours
If your area regularly loses power for a full day, AC recharging alone is not enough. A 400 W panel restores most of a DELTA 2 during daylight.
Off-grid locations
No KPLC connection at all? Solar is your primary recharge. Size panels at 1.5-2x your daily Wh consumption to account for cloudy days.
Reducing electricity bills
Even on-grid, solar charging during peak sun hours reduces draw from KPLC and the associated cost. Payback period in Kenya: typically 3-5 years.
